Prince Harry to start pilot training

24th December 2008

Prince Harry is to follow in his brother’s footsteps and attend RAF College Cranwell in Sleaford...

Harry, currently an officer in the Royal Armoured Corps, Household Cavalry Regiment, will become a fully qualified Army Air Corps pilot eventually after two and a half years of training.

His brother Prince William completed his training earlier this year before heading on to learn to fly helicopters with the Royal Navy.

According to Clarence House, the young royal will start training next month after completing a four-week course that assessed whether he had the talent and ability to fly.

Harry, 24, is an officer in the Household Cavalry Regiment but has now redirected his military career and probably given himself a better chance of being deployed to the front line again. He served for 10 weeks in Afghanistan earlier this year and has repeatedly said he wants to return.

The prince will begin pilot training in January 2009 having passed the four-week grading course at Middle Wallop in Hampshire.

Prince Harry flew 13 hours with an instructor in a Slingsby T67 single engine light aircraft, over a period of three weeks. The assessment did not require him to fly solo. Grading assessed his aptitude for Army flying training and his ability to learn at the required rate.

The first part of the course – known as the Army Pilot's Course – will last approximately until spring 2010. Only after successful completion of the course will Prince Harry begin training for a specific aircraft type such as Gazelle, Lynx or Apache. The aircraft type determines the length of the course.

The Prince has already served two and a half years in the Household Cavalry Regiment and has completed his tour of duty as a Troop Leader with the regiment at Windsor.
