Missing details of a fallen Soldier

20th November 2008

Details of a fallen soldier of the Royal Armoured Corps are needed…can you help?

Phillip Mortimer Smith of the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own) Royal Armoured Corps, who died fighting in North Africa during the Second World War, is to be included in a roll of honour, being written by David Eason, a former lance corporal in the Royal Hussars.

Trooper Smith, of Bewdley, was 20 years old when he was killed on May 6, 1943, and is buried at the Tripoli War Cemetery in Libya.

Mr Easton wants to publish a book with the story of each of these 161 men, including dates of their birth and death, their first job, where they went to school, how they died and dedications from surviving family.

On the morning of May 6, 1943, an attack under the command of General Alexander began on German lines. Tunis was the target of the operation, which began with a mass artillery barrage of 400 guns and followed by the largest air bombardment seen in North Africa.

Troops advanced on a two- mile front followed by the 11th Hussars who drove into the streets of Tunis. It is believed trooper Smith may have been killed on the way to Tunis but the precise circumstances of his death are shrouded in mystery.

Mr Eason, aged 45, of Leamington Spa, said it was possible the soldier could have close family in the Worcester area who would like to give a dedication to him or add to our knowledge of his life. He said: “I am trying to trace relatives and descendants still living in the local area and any one who knew Phillip or his family for information and photographs which will be included within his entry in the roll of honour.”

Once finished this will be the first ever complete published ‘roll of honour’ of the 11th Hussars and the first to include dedications from loved ones, Mr Eason said.

The 11th Hussars can trace its history back to 1715 (then as Dragoons).

David Eason can be contacted on 07896 201176.
